These are some sketchbook studies I worked on a little while back. I wanted to draw on the way coastal villages are dependent on the rhythm of extreme tides.

With black and white, I’m trying to capture the stillness of low tide and the play of light and shadow, conveying the theatrics and emotion between people and the sea.

The remaining sketchbook studies of Low Tide Mud Flats tell a more complete story together:

Nº 5 Scoured surfaces - ripples, grooves and shallow channels.

Nº 6 Fracture and Drying - desiccation and tidal return patina.

Nº 7 Residual flow - Rivulets and sinuous channels from retreating tides.

Nº 8 Accumulation - sediment layers and mud compression, grey on grey.

Nº 9 Marsh Plant - pulling, receding water.

Marooned boats are now lifeless, tethered to poles that were once safe channel markers.
